President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump emerged from the White House to greet King Charles and Queen Camilla as their car pulled up to the South entrance.
Trump and Charles shook hands, and the first lady and queen kissed on both cheeks. The Trumps and the royals then stood for a photograph as Trump quickly turned to the king to quietly chat. The president pointed to him and said, so the media could hear, “he made a great speech. I was very jealous.”
They posed for several seconds, continuing to talk during the photographs, then walked inside.
The president and king wore black tie tails to the state dinner while both the first lady and queen wore pink, the queen in a darker shade and first lady in a lighter shade.
The queen wore a Fiona Clare evening gown with an amethyst and diamond necklace gifted by a former Duchess of Kent to Queen Victoria, which was then passed to Queen Mary, according to Buckingham Palace. Camilla did not wear a tiara, a surprising break from typical royal protocol for senior female members of the British royal family when attending state dinners.
The first lady wore a gown by Christian Dior Haute Couture, off-white Dior suede gloves and Dior pale delphinium silk pumps.
