Rajaa has been elected thrice to the Assembly from Mannargudi.

After DMK came back to power in 2021, Rajaa was appointed as a member of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission and as the Chairman of the Legislative Committee on Estimates. Later in 2023, he was made minister.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi spoke with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, DMK supremo M K Stalin and victorious TVK president Vijay after the election results on Monday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said.

Gandhi congratulated Vijay on his party’s performance.

“This evening, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi spoke to Mamata Banerjee-ji and Thiru MK Stalin about the election results. He also congratulated the President of the TVK Thiru Vijay on the party’s performance,” Ramesh said on X.

While Banerjee suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the BJP in West Bengal, Stalin’s party was defeated by debutant Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu.

Renowned Tamil filmmaker S A Chandrasekhar on Monday expressed pride in his son and TVK chief Vijay’s performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, saying the actor-turned-politician is committed to meeting public expectations.

Speaking to PTI Videos amid the counting of votes, an emotional Chandrasekhar said he felt “very happy” and “very proud” of his son’s political journey.

“Tamil Nadu people are expecting big things from my son. He will do it. Definitely, he will do it,” Chandrasekhar said.

When asked about the public’s response to Vijay’s campaign promises, Chandrasekhar extended his heartfelt thanks to the electorate for their support.

He reiterated that the people of the state have placed significant hope in the TVK leader.

“For Tamil Nadu, he has so many dreams in his mind. Let him do the work,” he added, acknowledging the aspirations his son carries for the state’s future.

Addressing the political narrative of the election, the veteran director observed that the competition had effectively narrowed down to a direct fight between the TVK and the DMK. He noted that Vijay had anticipated this dynamic since entering politics two years ago. “From the beginning he said this is between TVK and DMK. AICC In-charge Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar said on Monday that he has given a report to Congress leadership and they will “take a call on Tamil Nadu”.

Congress, which fought the assembly polls as part of the DMK-led coalition, is poised to win five seats in Tamil Nadu.

Chodankar said youth and women voted for TVK in large numbers.

“The people of Tamil Nadu, they voted for a change. Especially the youngsters and women have moved towards TVK and that’s why TVK is getting such large numbers. I have already submitted a report to our Congress President, Kharge ji, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul ji, and General Secretary of the Organisation Venugopal ji. Vijay on course to create history in Tamil Nadu

In perhaps the biggest electoral surprise in recent years, actor Vijay’s TVK on Monday was on course to win its maiden electoral battle in Tamil Nadu, while Congress-led UDF was poised for a return to the ruling saddle in Kerala after a 10 year-stint in opposition.

Though located between Tamil Nadu districts, neighbouring Puducherry seemed unfazed by a TVK “wave” and once again seems to have given the thumbs up to the incumbent AINRC-led NDA dispensation in the union territory.

Contrary to most exit polls having predicted a ruling DMK show in Tamil Nadu, debutant Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam was on the path to leading in 109 of the 233 seats it contested. Though the party fielded nominees for all 234 seats, its candidate’s nomination in Edappadi in Salem was rejected on technical grounds. 

As per latest EC data, TVK was declared winner in three constituencies and was ahead in 104 others. Vijay himself was leading both in Perambur and Tiruchirappali East. The party needs to cross the 118 magic number to form a government on its own.

The DMK, which was trailing behind AIADMK in the third place for a long time, moved up to the second place, but party president and Chief Minister M K Stalin was trailing from his Kolathur seat in Chennai. (PTI)

‘Impressive feat’: Jagan congratulates Vijay as TVK tops TN trends

YSRCP supremo Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday congratulated Vijay, chief of TVK, on his party emerging as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu in its very first election.

Calling the feat impressive, the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister wished strength and success to the actor-politician as he embarks on a “new chapter of service”.

“A special and heartfelt shoutout to my dear brother, Vijay! Emerging as the single largest party in your very first election is impressive. Wishing you immense strength and success as you embark on this new chapter of service,” Reddy said on ‘X’, adding, “God be with you.” Further, the former CM conveyed his sympathies to Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, where the TMC is trailing the NDA.

He also congratulated the BJP and other parties for their performance in the election results, especially in West Bengal and Assam. (PTI)

In the ongoing Tittakudi assembly election, a tight race between Ganesan C.V (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and Rajasekar A (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam), with only 530 votes separating them as 60% of the count is complete. Notably, Murugumaran N from All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured 24,046 votes, highlighting a potential shift in voter preferences that could impact the final outcome.

Vijay’s poll promises: Healthcare

On the health front, he promised a drug-free Tamil Nadu. Vijay also committed to modernising hospitals, providing free annual health checkups, and introducing a Rs 25 lakh family health insurance scheme.

The manifesto also included a Rs 3,000 monthly pension for the elderly and the differently-abled, 200 units of free power, patta (land deed) regularisation, and 100 per cent piped drinking water supply for all households.

Some of the policy intereventions promised by TVK include a legal guarantee to provide essential government services like community certificates, and land pattas, within a strictly specified timeframe.

Vijay also promised doorstep delivery of governance by implementing a system to deliver services, such as ration supplies, directly to the people. He also assured that ease of doing business will be paramount to his government and promised a strict guarantee that business licences will be issued within 21 days. (PTI) 

Vijay’s poll promises: Unemployment

Addressing youth unemployment, Vijay pledged to create five lakh new government jobs and offer as many stipendiary internships. Unemployed graduates will be provided a monthly aid of up to Rs 4,000. For government employees, the party assured consideration of the Old Pension Scheme and the regularisation of contract workers, including nurses. (PTI) 

Vijay’s poll promises: Agrarian Welfare

TVK’s manifesto placed a strong emphasis on agrarian welfare, too.

The party promised a full waiver of agricultural cooperative crop loans for farmers owning less than five acres of land, while those holding more than five acres will receive a 50 per cent waiver. Additionally, the party promised a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 3,500 per quintal for paddy and Rs 4,500 per tonne for sugarcane. (PTI) 

Vijay’s poll promises: Education

The manifesto also laid importance on education. To prevent school dropouts, mothers or guardians of children studying in government and state-aided schools will receive Rs 15,000 annually.

Vijay promised 100 special residential schools named after iconic leader K Kamaraj, credited with revolutionising education in the state, and higher education loans of up to Rs 20 lakh. The TVK founder also assured AI Ministry, AI University and AI City. (PTI)

As the new-entrant TVK appears likely to emerge as the single largest party and form the government, the focus has now turned into actor-politician Vijay’s poll promises, including 8 gm gold for marriage, which is worth about Rs 14,000 (22 carat).

Vijay’s assurances in the party manifesto include Rs 2,500 monthly assistance for women below 60 years, 8 gm gold for marriage and six free cooking gas cylinders a year, per family.

The actor-turned-politician also assured a quality silk saree in addition to gold for indigent brides and interest-free loans up to Rs 5 lakh for women-run SHGs. He assured corruption-free good governance if voted to power in his maiden electoral fight. (PTI)

In ULUNDURPETTAI, a tight race between Vasanthavel G R of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Kumaraguru R of All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam, with only 1,448 votes separating them as 52% of the count is complete. The projected turnout has increased by 5.1 percentage points compared to the previous election, while Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s vote share has dropped by approximately 16.6 points from its winning share in 2021. A potential game-changer is Sudhakar M of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam who secured 37,065 votes, more than the current winning margin.

With 12 rounds remaining and half the votes counted, this race is shaping up to be tight. It’s noteworthy that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s vote share has dropped significantly compared to the previous election, while Revathi T.M of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam received 32,445 votes, suggesting a potential shift in voter preferences.
