Summer-like weather forecast for Switzerland after a chilly spell

After more than a week of rainy and cool weather, Switzerland’s residents can look forward to sun and high temperatures at last.

According to the MeteoSchweiz weather service, the country will experience “a significant warming” over the coming days.

“If this trend continues, the end of May could have a decidedly summery character over much of Central Europe, and particularly in Switzerland,” it said.

Just how warn will it get?

From Thursday May 21st, temperatures in most regions (except for high Alps) will reach temperatures ranging from low to mid-20s.

By the weekend, they will climb to upper 20s, with one city – Valais’ capital Sion – even reaching the 30C-mark.

This weather will last until at least May 26th, as the MeteoSchweiz’s seven-day forecast indicates.

This means a warm and sunny weather for the long Pentecost weekend ahead.

What can we expect this summer?

It is difficult to accurately predict weather patterns so many weeks ahead.

However, according to a meteorologist Peter Wick, the next few months are likely to be particularly hot, possibly even setting new heat records in Switzerland and Europe in general.

(As a reminder, the hottest day in the summer of 2025  was August 13th, with the record-breaking temperature of 36.5C in Payerne, canton Vaud).

Wick pointed out that summers have become hotter.

“In recent years, it has almost always been too hot, sometimes with record average annual temperatures,” he said.” In the long term, a summer that is too hot is significantly more likely than a summer that is too cold.”
