In response to rising fuel prices, the French government has launched a scheme for workers who need to use their vehicles for business purposes. You can now use an online simulator to see if you’re eligible for the “fuel allowance”.
To help offset the impact of rising fuel prices, the French government is introducing a €50 “fuel allowance,” equivalent to roughly 20 cents per litre over a three-month period.
The scheme is aimed at people who use a petrol, diesel, or non-plug-in hybrid vehicle for work-related purposes (grand rouleurs) and who either commute at least 15 km one way to and from work or drive at least 8,000 km per year for professional reasons.
To check whether you are eligible for the scheme, the Impots.gouv website provides an online eligibility calculator.
It does not require any login and is designed to give an instant indication of whether you can claim the fuel allowance. It is a guided questionnaire that evaluates your situation based on three main things: your travel distance, your vehicle type and usage and your household income and tax situation.
The first part of the questionnaire focuses on how you use your vehicle. You will be asked whether you use a car, motorcycle, or van for commuting or professional activity, the distance you travel between home and work and if you exceed a certain annual mileage threshold (often around 8,000 km per year).
Not all vehicles qualify. The simulator filters out cases such as company cars, where fuel is already paid by the employer or certain commercial or agricultural vehicles.
Finally, you will need to provide your tax reference income (revenu fiscal de référence) as well as your latest tax notice information.
Once all information is entered, the simulator instantly tells you whether you are potentially eligible or not.
However, this result is not an official approval. It is only a pre-check. If eligible, you must then proceed to the formal application process once it opens.
