The Swiss degree programmes that are among the ‘best in the world’

Switzerland’s universities not only consistently rank among the best overall globally, but their specific degree programmes also receive top scores in a new ranking.

This is what emerges from a new analysis carried out by the higher education consultancy QS, which compared over 21,000 academic programmes at 1,900 universities in more than 100 countries.

It ranked 28 degree curricula at 11 Swiss educational institutions among the top 10 worldwide, confirming that Swiss universities – both public and private – hold their own against other countries’ top contenders.

What does this ranking reveal?

Not surprisingly perhaps, as it has been rated highly in previous QS rankings, as well as those conducted by  Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich (ETH) scored high – that is, in the top 10 – in a number of degree programmes:

1st place in Earth and Marine Sciences, Geology, and Geophysics

3rd in Engineering and Techology

4th in Civil and Structural Engineering; Architecture; and Environmental Sciences

6th in Mechanical engineering; Aerospace Engineering; Production Engineering; as well as in Natural Sciences

7th in Chemical Engineering

8th in Agriculture and forestry as well as in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

9th in Physics, Astronomy, and Chemistry; Statistics and Operations Research

10th in Mathematics; Computer Science and Information Systems; and Materials Science

What other university programmes are highly ranked?

The Hospitality & Leisure Management School in  Lausanne scored the top position (1st place) in the Hospitality and Leisure Management category.

Five other graduate schools are included in this tourism-oriented degree programme:

2nd place: Les Roches Global Hospitality Management Education

4th:  Swiss Hotel Management School in Leysin

5th: César Ritz Colleges Switzerland in Brig-Glis

8th: HIM Business School in Montreux

9th: Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland in Le Bouveret

And there is more…

Zurich University’s and Bern University’s Dentistry programmes both scored 8th place globally, while the ETH’s sister school in Lausanne (EPFL) placed 10th for its Electrical and Electronic Engineering course.
