A 40-year-old skier died after apparently setting off an avalanche while skiing down a mountain in the Pyrenees, southern France, sources told AFP on Sunday.
Police found the man’s body after an avalanche hit the Pic d’Endron, a mountain peak near the Spanish border, on Saturday.
The skier was alone on the mountain at the time of the incident, according to sources close to the case.
The avalanche was “apparently triggered” by the victim, one of the sources told AFP.
The avalanche risk level was “3 out of 5 above 2,000 metres” on Saturday, they added.
Located in the municipality of Val-de-Sos, in the Ariège Pyrenees, the Pic d’Endron reaches an altitude of 2,472 metres.
Deadly avalanches are far from rare in France, particularly on the French Alps, one of Europe’s most popular skiing destinations.
At least 28 people have died on the French Alps this year, according to AFP.
