Indian banks and stock markets will observe multiple holidays in April 2026, affecting trading and banking operations across the country.
Stock markets will remain closed on two days apart from the weekends: April 3 (Good Friday) and April 14 (Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti). Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is observed nationwide, while April 14 commemorates the birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Before April, two more holidays are due. Banks and markets in select cities will be closed on March 26 for Shri Ram Navami, which marks the birth of Lord Ram, and on March 31 for Shri Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th tirthankara of Jainism.
On the banking front, all banks will be shut on April 1 to close their annual accounts, a standard year-end practice. Regional festivals will also trigger localised bank closures through the month — April 14 and 15 see the widest coverage, coinciding with new year celebrations across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Himachal Pradesh.
Additionally, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks will remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of April.
