Some things might be changing in Kansas City after the Chiefs‘ first losing season since 2012, but Travis Kelce is set to remain. 

Kansas City announced on March 11 that the star tight end is indeed returning for his 14th season; Kelce agreed to a one-year, $12 million deal to rejoin the Chiefs. Two weeks later, the deal was, reportedly, restructured to be a three-year extension, worth a total of $57 million. However, that money isn’t guaranteed if Kelce retires. 

Members of the team expressed optimism that Kelce would return for another season in recent weeks. Kelce, who’ll turn 37 in the middle of the 2026 season, has dealt with retirement talk over the last couple of seasons as his production has dipped. Some also wondered if Kansas City missing the playoffs in 2025 might lead him to walk away from the game.

But Kelce was still productive in 2025, the top target for Patrick Mahomes before the quarterback suffered an ACL tear late in the season. He had 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns last season, earning his 11th-straight Pro Bowl nod.

Kelce was ranked 39th in FOX Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman‘s top 100 NFL free agents ranking, placing third among tight ends.

Kelce has been vital to the Chiefs’ dynastic success, helping the team win three Super Bowls and five AFC titles since the 2019 season. He’s also earned seven All-Pro nods, logging at least 800 receiving yards every season since his rookie year. 

With Kelce back in the fold, the Chiefs’ next order of business might be to add more playmakers around him and Mahomes. Thus far this offseason, the Chiefs have, most notably, signed former Seattle Seahawks running back and Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III. Many mock drafts have them selecting a wide receiver in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft (they have picks No. 9 and 29).

Kelce’s decision to return came a few days after Kansas City traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. The Chiefs received four draft picks in that deal, including Los Angeles’ first-round pick (No. 29 overall). 

With 48 games spread across four days, bettors were plenty enthused to jump on 2026 March Madness odds.

So there were plenty of notable winners.

Five Alive

Betting $5,000 on a parlay isn’t a highly recommended activity. But at least the Fanatics customer didn’t try to string together 10 or 15 outcomes.

Rather, it was a relatively reasonable five-leg parlay, tying together five first-round games across Thursday and Friday. The ticket had two moneyline plays — meaning that team just had to win the game — and three plays against the spread.

Odds on that ticket were +3421, or about 34/1. But the customer utilized a profit boost to ostensibly double the odds to +6546.

The bettor got a great sweat out of the first two games. VCU trailed North Carolina by 19 points with 15 minutes remaining, but rallied to tie it at 75 and force overtime.

The Rams went on to an 82-78 victory.

TCU moneyline was tight, as well, with the Horned Frogs beating Ohio State 66-64 on a layup with four seconds remaining.

Texas Tech and Tennessee were no sweat, with the Red Raiders rolling 91-71 over Akron, and the Vols dumping Miami-Ohio 78-56.

Iowa capped it off with a 67-61 win to cover as a 2-point favorite.

And with that, $5,000 turned into a whopping $327,300 profit, for a total payout of $332,300.

Buzzer Beater

DraftKings Sportsbook offered an interesting prop bet on March Madness odds: Will there be a buzzer beater, with the lead changing hands as time expires?

One bettor put $500 on the prop, at +1000 odds (10/1). And on Sunday, St. John’s made it pay in a thriller against Kansas.

The Red Storm blew a 14-point second-half lead, and the game was tied at 65 in the waning seconds. Dylan Darling then drove for a layup at the buzzer, giving St. John’s a 67-65 win.

So that $500 bet turned into $5,000 profit (total payout $5,500). It’s not a life-changing six-figure win, but it’s pretty good ROI, to be sure.

Biggest Loser

It’s always helpful to remind yourself that sports betting is a form of gambling. The house almost always has an edge. You’re generally going to lose more often than you win.

Even if you’re getting a ton of points.

Such was the case for a Hard Rock Bet customer in Friday’s game between No. 1 seed Florida and No. 16 seed Prairie View A&M.

The bettor put $110,000 on Prairie View +35.5. All the Panthers had to do was stay within 35 points, and the wager would profit $100,000.

But it wasn’t meant to be. Prairie View trailed 60-21 at halftime en route to a 114-55 loss, 24 points short of covering the big number.

So that’s a six-figure donation to the house.

Parlay Partay

If you feel compelled to put a ridiculous number of legs on a parlay bet, then at least feel equally compelled to not wager much money on it.

A Fanatics customer understood the assignment. The bettor put all of $3.42 on a 22-leg parlay, mixing in a handful of NBA player props with a bundle of NCAA Tournament first-round games.

The final leg was Saturday’s second-round game: Michigan State moneyline vs. Louisville.

As you can see, the bettor didn’t take a single underdog and, in many cases, utilized alternate point spreads to make the selections not just favorites, but sizable favorites.

Even with that strategy, though, it’s quite a chore to get 22 legs across the finish line. Michigan State finished it off by beating Louisville 77-69.

At odds of +301141 — in easier-to-digest terms, just beyond 3011/1 — that three dollars and change became a hefty $10,302.

Also at Fanatics, a customer put $100 on an eight-leg parlay, mixing in a few point spreads with Utah State moneyline vs. Villanova and Iowa-Clemson Under 131 points.

Utah State trailed by 10 early in the second half, but closed that gap with a 14-4 run to tie Villanova at 54 with 14 minutes left. And the Aggies finished the game with a 15-3 run to win 86-76.

The Iowa-Clemson Under barely got there, with Iowa winning 67-61 (128 points).

At odds of +16623 (about 166/1), the bettor’s $100 investment became $16,723.

Bet a Lot, Win a Little

A few bettors made the move of taking massive moneyline favorites in first-round games. The idea behind such a bet: It’s a lead-pipe cinch that, say, a No. 1 seed is going to handily beat a No. 16 seed.

A DraftKings customer nearly found out that it’s not quite that easy. The bettor put $50,000 on Duke moneyline -20000 to beat Siena on Thursday.

To clarify: At those odds, it takes a $200 bet to win $1. So the $50,000 play would win just $250.

And the Blue Devils barely got there. Shockingly, Siena led 43-32 at halftime. Duke ultimately chipped away to escape with a 71-65 victory.

Two similar wagers went more according to plan for DK customers. The first was a $180,000 bet on St. John’s moneyline -600 vs. Northern Iowa.

The Red Storm coasted to a 79-53 victory, and the bettor pocketed $30,000 profit (total payout $210,000).

The second was a $20,000 bet on Illinois moneyline -8000 vs. Penn. The Fighting Illini rolled 105-70, and the bettor won all of $250.

Here’s Hoping You Had It

On Friday, favorites went 16-0 straight up and 12-4 against the spread. As DraftKings pointed out afterward, a 16-leg moneyline parlay of favorites had odds of +3400 (34/1).

If you threw 10 bucks on that, then you would’ve fattened your wallet by $340. If you got frisky and put $100 on it, then it’s a $3,400 winner.

And as noted above, VCU trailed North Carolina by 19 in the second half. If you’d jumped on Rams in-game moneyline at that point — which isn’t advisable, but in case you had — the odds were +3500.

A tenner on VCU to come back and win would’ve netted $350.

I Like Big Bets and I Cannot Lie

A few other high-roller plays from the first weekend of March Madness odds:

• $100,000 Purdue -7.5 vs. Miami. The Boilermakers covered in a 79-69 win, netting the bettor $90,909 profit (total payout $190,909).
• $55,000 St. John’s -3.5 (-108) vs. Kansas (DraftKings). That’s a loser, as the Red Storm won by just two, 67-65, on the aforementioned buzzer beater.
• $54,100 Texas Tech -1.5 (+105) vs. Alabama. The Red Raiders got run out of the gym, losing 90-65. So that’s another sizable donation to the house.

With these major wagers, keep in mind that the high-rollers have the bankroll to make such bets — and absorb what would be obscene losses for the rest of us. 

Keep your wagers and expectations reasonable for the Sweet 16. Don’t bet more than you can afford to lose.

Are college sports in a better or worse place than before the NIL boom?

Gone are the days when blue-blood brands ran college athletics. This is an era where resources — and how creatively they’re deployed — matter more than pedigree. 

Conferences like the Big Ten have benefited from this changing landscape, pairing financial resources with experienced coaching.

While the landscape looks vastly different for many old-school coaches, those who have adapted have stuck around and extended their careers. Parts of their jobs have become easier as well. They’re managing rosters more like front offices.

“In college basketball, you had to pound the pavement,” Cowherd said. “You’re going to six AAU tournaments over the course of a day and a half. Now it’s administrative. Now you write a check.”

That shift has helped produce one of the deepest talent pools in recent memory.

Freshmen stars are arriving with more incentive to stay. Veteran players are delaying the jump to the pros. International prospects, meanwhile, are increasingly choosing to play college basketball in the U.S. because they can gain eligibility, get better exposure and get paid more than in the overseas leagues.

The reason that Cowherd argues “it’s better,” is because of the parody at the top. 

Programs like Indiana football and Vanderbilt basketball have leveraged NIL to accelerate rebuilds. Iowa basketball followed a similar blueprint, pairing financial backing with a strong system while bringing in an elite-level coach from a mid-major school.

That formula paid off in a defining moment of March Madness up to this point: the ninth-seeded Hawkeyes knocking off defending national champion Florida in the Round of 32.

In another era, that type of upset might have felt shocking to all. Now, it feels like the reality we’ve come to expect.

The NFL offseason is in full swing.

As teams continue to fill out their coaching staffs, some teams are already making plans on what to do with their rosters ahead of the start of the new league year in March. 

Who’ll get cut? Who’ll get traded? Who’ll get extended? Who’ll get the franchise tag?

Here’s the latest look at some of the most notable rumors around the NFL.

Tommy DeVito new backup for Patriots

After QB Josh Dobbs’s release, Tommy DeVito is in line to be the New England Patriots backup quarterback under Drake Maye in this upcoming season.

In 2024, DeVito was released by the New York Giants, being the odd man out in a competitive QB pool with players like Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and first-round pick Jaxson Dart. The season prior, he played three games, completing 70.5% of his passing attempts. 

After signing with the Patriots, he aims to provide support at quarterback and help support Maye.

The San Francisco 49ers opted not to exercise the $10 million option bonus on their star left tackle, per ESPN. Williams, who has no remaining guaranteed money on a three-year, $82.7 million deal with the 49ers past 2026, is set to count for roughly $47 million on San Francisco’s 2026 payroll, but the team reportedly plans to discuss altering the terms of his contract. Williams, a three-time All-Pro and 12-time Pro Bowler, will be 38 at the start of the 2026 season.

Dolphins won’t trade Achane

Multiple teams have contacted the Miami Dolphins this offseason to see if they were willing to part with running back De’Von Achane as part of a larger roster blowup, but per ESPN, Achane is not available.

The fourth-year back is expected to be part of Miami’s future, assuming an extension can be worked out with the 24-year-old, as his rookie deal expires at the end of this season.

Achane led the league in yards per carry, with 5.7, and set a new career-high in rushing yards with 1,350, blowing past his previous mark of 907. He finished with over 1,800 yards from scrimmage total, thanks to also making 67 receptions for 488 yards, and scored 12 touchdowns overall.

The Dolphins released quarterback Tua Tagovailoa earlier in March, traded five-time Pro Bowler Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Jets and, on Tuesday, dealt top wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Broncos. Earlier in the offseason, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was cut; all told, per ESPN, the Dolphin have roughly $175 million in dead money against the salary cap in 2026.

Not only will Evans test free agency, but the star wide receiver could be on the move. He’ll likely have five potential suitors when free agency opens, FOX Sports’ Henry McKenna reported. Teams have offered Evans a contract worth north of $27 million per year as well, according to FOX Sports’ Greg Auman. There’s also a sense that his time in Tampa Bay could be coming to an end, NFL Media reported. Evans is the third-highest-ranked wide receiver in our top 100 NFL free agents list. He also ranks 15th in the overall ranking.

WR A.J. Brown‘s trade wish list

Where does the Eagles‘ star wide receiver want to play next if he’s traded this offseason? Brown has the Bills, Chargers, Chiefs and Patriots on his preferred list of teams to get traded to, according to Sports Illustrated. New England has been commonly linked to Brown in recent weeks as the Patriots seek to add another wide receiver following the release of Stefon Diggs. However, talks have stalled between the two sides, NFL Media reported.

Nine-time Pro-Bowler Mack agreed to a one-year, $18 million deal to remain with the Chargers. That figure is fully guaranteed. The 35-year-old will officially return for his 13th NFL season. Mack missed time early in 2025 with a dislocated elbow but still finished the season with 5.5 sacks, 32 tackles, four forced fumbles and a safety.

Philadelphia has extended Davis to a three-year, $78 million deal that includes $65 million guaranteed, with the $26 million average annual value an NFL record for a nose tackle. Last season, Davis totaled a career-high in sacks (4.5), passes defended (six) and combined tackles (72). Davis hasn’t missed a game since his 2022 rookie campaign.

The Bills have re-signed McGovern on a four-year, $52 million deal, according to ESPN. The deal includes $32 million guaranteed. McGovern, a 2024 Pro Bowler, has spent the last three seasons in Buffalo (2023-25).

Dallas has placed a second-round tender worth $5.76 million on its star kicker, per ESPN. Aubrey can now sign an offer sheet with another team, but the Cowboys have the right to match any deal. If Aubrey signs a contract with another team and Dallas doesn’t match the deal, the Cowboys will receive a second-round pick. 

Aubrey, a one-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler in each of his three seasons in the NFL (2023-25), was 36 of 42 on field goal attempts in 2025 (85.7%), including 11 of 17 on kicks of 50 or more yards (64.7%). He holds the NFL record with six made field goals from 60 or more yards.

Houston is releasing Mixon in a move which saves it $8 million, per ESPN. Mixon, a two-time Pro Bowler, spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Bengals (2017-23) before being acquired by the Texans in 2024. In 2024, the veteran back rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns on 4.1 yards per carry across 14 regular-season games for the Texans, while tallying 309 receiving yards. Mixon didn’t play in 2025 due to a foot injury. Meanwhile, Houston recently acquired veteran running back David Montgomery from the Lions.

Meanwhile, Houston has extended its starting tight end on a one-year, $12.6 million deal. He had one season remaining on a three-year, $36 million deal. Last season, Schultz, who has spent the last three years in Houston after a five-year stint with the Cowboys, totaled a career-high 82 receptions for 777 yards and three touchdowns. 

The Bears have their new center.

Chicago has reportedly acquired center Garrett Bradbury from the Patriots in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Bradbury started every game for New England last season.

The deal comes days after Bears center Drew Dalman surprisingly retired at 27 years old. Bradbury, 30, just finished his seventh NFL season after starting his career with six years in Minnesota.

Cleveland restructured Watson’s contract, clearing roughly $36 million in cap space. Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler who hasn’t played since Oct. 2024 due to injury, is entering the final season of a five-year, $230 million deal.

Los Angeles has re-signed Curl to a three-year, $36 million deal, with a maximum value of $39 million. Curl, who has spent the last two seasons with the Rams (2024-25), totaled two interceptions, 2.0 sacks and 122 combined tackles in the 2025 regular season. He then had one interception and 27 combined tackles in the postseason.

Carson Wentz-Frank Reich reunion … again?

Wentz is the “preferred” free agent quarterback option for new Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich, according to SNY. Reich was Wentz’ offensive coordinator on the Eagles over his first two seasons in the NFL from 2016-17 and was his head coach on the Colts in 2021. Last season, Wentz played for the Vikings, initially serving as the team’s backup quarterback before starting five games in place of the injured J.J. McCarthy before suffering a season-ending injury to his non-throwing shoulder (left). Wentz earned his only Pro Bowl nod while being coached by Reich in 2017.

Los Angeles has signed Tyler Biadasz to a three-year, $30 million deal, per NFL Media. Biadasz, a 2022 Pro Bowler with the Cowboys, was released by the Commanders last week after two seasons in the nation’s capital.

The Commanders are the latest team to make a cap-clearing move in the week ahead of free agency, releasing Lattimore. The move will clear $18.5 million in cap space for Washington, which will now have nearly $90 million available in cap space this offseason, per Over The Cap. Lattimore ranked 17th in Greg Auman’s top cap casualty candidates entering the offseason. He’s played just 18 games over the last two years, dealing with multiple injuries. 

The Browns are getting some much-needed help along their offensive line, making a deal that could also have ramifications at the top of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Texans are trading Howard to the Browns for a fifth-round pick. Howard will also reportedly receive a three-year, $63 million extension as part of the deal. 

Cleveland’s O-line was among the worst in the league in 2025, with Pro Football Focus ranking the group the second-worst offensive line last season. Offensive tackle Dawand Jones was also the Browns’ only Week 1 starter on their offensive line who was under contract for the 2026 season. With the Browns in desperate need of O-line help, many mock drafts projected them to select an offensive tackle with the sixth overall pick. Monday’s trade, which can’t be made official until March 11, might allow the Browns to address other needs at the top of the draft, like wide receiver.

In terms of the salary cap, the Chiefs were well underwater entering the offseason. They’ve given themselves some breathing room, though, after cutting Taylor. The move creates $20 million in cap space, and Kansas City is now roughly $15 million under the salary cap, per Over The Cap. Taylor was one of the NFL’s top cap casualty candidates entering the offseason, according to FOX Sports’ Greg Auman, ranking eighth on the list. Taylor, who had been the Chiefs’ starting right tackle since 2023, led them in penalties in each of his three years in Kansas City. 

Von Miller the general manager?

The two-time Super Bowl champion, three-time All-Pro and Super Bowl MVP reportedly spent time at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine learning the ropes of what it takes to be an NFL general manager. The 36-year-old Miller, an eight-time Pro Bowler, spent last season with the Commanders, totaling 9.0 sacks and 26 combined tackles. 

Dean is expected to hit the open market, and the Cowboys will be among the teams that pursue him. Last season, Dean totaled a career-high 4.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and 55 combined tackles. He was limited to 10 regular-season games due to knee and hamstring injuries, respectively. 

This comes after Dallas created roughly $66 million in cap space by restructuring the contracts of quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and guard Tyler Smith. Prescott, a four-time Pro Bowler, is entering the second season of a four-year, $240 million deal; Lamb, a one-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler, is entering the second season of a four-year, $136 million deal; Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, begins a four-year, $96 million deal in 2027. Smith had minor surgery on his right knee after the 2025 Pro Bowl Games but is expected to be ready for OTAs.

NFL salary cap number revealed

The NFL announced that the 2026 salary cap will be $301.2 million. This is a $22 million increase from 2025. Agents of NFL free agents can begin negotiating contracts with teams at noon ET on March 9, with NFL free agency officially opening at 4 p.m. ET on March 11.

Dallas announced on Feb. 27 that it has placed the franchise tag on Pickens, which is worth roughly $28 million for the 2026 NFL season. Pickens, who was set to be arguably the best wide receiver on the free agent market, is coming off a breakout season in what was his first year with the Cowboys, totaling a career high in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429) and receiving touchdowns (nine). Pickens, who earned his first career Pro Bowl nod in 2025, spent the first three seasons of his career with the Steelers (2022-24).

Biadasz had one year remaining on a three-year, $29.2 million deal, and his release will incur a $10.9 million cap hit and leave $8.1 million in dead cap. Biadasz was a key part of Washington’s NFC championship run last season. He was a Pro Bowler for the Cowboys in 2022. He’s now an unrestricted free agent.

The Colts have granted Richardson permission to seek a trade, according to ESPN. Richardson, who was selected by the Colts with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has started just 15 games in his NFL career; he suffered shoulder and head injuries in 2023, was benched during 2024 and lost his starting job to veteran Daniel Jones last summer while also dealing with an eye injury in 2025.

New York is sending defensive end and 2022 first-round pick Jermaine Johnson to Tennessee for nose tackle and 2024 second-round pick T’Vondre Sweat, per NFL Media. Johnson, a 2023 Pro Bowler, totaled three sacks and 43 combined tackles in 14 games in 2025. Meanwhile, over the first two seasons of his career (2024-25), Sweat has averaged 1.5 sacks and 42.5 combined tackles per season.

The Bears have granted Edmunds permission to seek a trade, according to the Chicago Tribune. Edmunds, a two-time Pro Bowler, is entering the final season of a four-year, $72 million deal. Last season, he totaled 1.0 sacks, four interceptions, nine passes defended and 112 combined tackles across 13 regular-season games. The 27-year-old, who spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Bills (2018-22), missed four games in 2025 due to a groin injury but returned for the postseason. Edmunds has totaled 100-plus combined tackles in each of his eight seasons.

49ers contract dispute?

Star left tackle Trent Williams and the 49ers are “struggling to find a contractual solution,” per ESPN. Williams, a three-time All-Pro and 12-time Pro Bowler, is entering the final season of a three-year, $82.7 million deal. Williams played through a hamstring injury down the stretch of the 2025 season, which ended for San Francisco at the hands of the eventual Super Bowl-champion Seahawks in the NFC divisional round.

Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham revealed that the team will release Cousins on the first day of the new league year (March 11). The 37-year-old Cousins, who has two seasons remaining on a four-year, $180 million deal which included $100 million guaranteed when the deal was inked, was benched for Michael Penix Jr. with three games remaining in the 2024 regular season, with Penix opening 2025 as the Falcons’ starter. A season-ending knee injury for Penix put Cousins back under center, with the veteran posting 1,721 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and an 84.8 passer rating, while completing 61.7% of his passes across 10 appearances (eight starts). 

Jaguars running back Etienne has interest in joining the Chiefs this offseason, The Kansas City Star reported. Etienne is set to become a free agent on March 9 when his rookie contract expires. After an up-and-down start to his career, Etienne closed out his rookie deal on a high note. He rushed for 1,107 yards on 4.3 yards per carry, adding 292 receiving yards as he scored 13 total touchdowns. Chiefs running backs Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco are both set to become free agents this offseason as well. So, the Chiefs certainly have a need for a running back this offseason. Etienne is ranked 20th in FOX Sports’ top 100 NFL free agents list, placing third among the running backs on the list. 

Philadelphia’s longtime right tackle will return for a 14th NFL season, Johnson told The Philadelphia Inquirer. Johnson, a two-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler, missed the Eagles’ past eight combined games in 2025 (seven regular-season games and one playoff game) due to a foot injury. Following its Super Bowl LIX triumph, Philadelphia won the NFC East at 11-6 last season but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round.

Kansas City has restructured Mahomes’ contract, bringing his 2026 salary down from $78.2 million to $34.65 million and creating $43.56 million in cap space. The Chiefs are currently over the cap. Mahomes’ 2025 campaign ended in Week 15 after he tore both his ACL and LCL, but the three-time Super Bowl MVP is targeting a Week 1 return.

The Dolphins are already making some roster moves, releasing veteran edge rusher Chubb, NFL Media reported on Feb. 16. Chubb, who’ll turn 30 in June, had a productive season in 2025, logging 8.5 sacks. However, he was set to have a cap hit of over $31 million in the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Miami was also over the salary cap when the offseason began, and cutting him cleared $7.34 million in cap space, per Over The Cap. 

NFL wins grievance, bans “team report cards”

An arbitrator determined that the NFL Players Association violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the NFL by distributing annual “team report cards” and ordered the union to stop making public any future reports, per ESPN.

“We are pleased with the decision from the arbitrator, upholding the parties’ collective bargaining agreement and prohibiting the NFLPA from disparaging our clubs and individuals through ‘report cards’ allegedly based on data and methodologies that it has steadfastly refused to disclose,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. “We remain committed to working in partnership with the NFLPA and an independent survey company to develop and administer a scientifically valid survey to solicit accurate and reliable player feedback as the parties agreed in the CBA.”

General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan provided somewhat of an update on the future of the team’s current starter. 

“I don’t know what the future holds right now, and I told Tua that,” he revealed on Feb. 12. “We’re working through some things. What I can tell you is that we’re going to infuse competition into that room — whether Tua is part of the room [or not]. … Tua knows where we are. We’ve been very honest and upfront, and Tua also knows that he will be the first to know when we make a decision. … We’re getting close to a decision, and when we do, we’ll let Tua know whether he’s going to be part of this or not, and we’ll move forward.”

Tagovailoa is entering the second season of a four-year, $212.4 million deal with the Dolphins, who have a new general manager in Sullivan and a new head coach in Jeff Hafley. Last season, Tagovailoa, a 2023 Pro Bowler, threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 starts, while posting an 88.5 passer rating, his lowest mark since 2020. If the Dolphins release Tagovailoa, they would incur an NFL-record $99.2 million dead cap hit.

Njoku, who spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Browns (2017-25) and is set to become a free agent, posted on Instagram that “the time for [him] to find a new home has come.” Last season, Njoku totaled 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns across 12 games; he missed five games due to a knee injury. Njoku, who Cleveland selected with the No. 29 overall pick in 2017 out of Miami (Fla.), was a Pro Bowler in 2023 in a season that saw him total a career-high in receptions (81), receiving yards (882) and receiving touchdowns (six). He’s third in Browns history with 384 receptions, sixth with 34 touchdowns and 12th with 4,062 receiving yards. 

Rams extend HC Sean McVay, GM Les Snead

McVay and Snead have agreed to multiyear extensions to stay with the Rams, the team announced on Feb. 2.

The pair have led the Rams through one of the longest stretches of success in franchise history. The Rams are 92–57 in the regular season and 10-6 in the playoffs since Snead and owner Stan Kroenke hired a then-30-year-old McVay in 2017, one year after the franchise returned home from St. Louis. The Rams immediately ended a 12-year playoff absence and reached the Super Bowl one year later before winning the franchise’s second Super Bowl title in February 2022. Los Angeles has had eight winning seasons, seven playoff berths and four NFC West titles in nine years under McVay, the youngest coach to reach the Super Bowl and to win it. The Rams went 12-5 this season before winning two road playoff games to reach the NFC championship game, where they lost to the Seahawks.

McVay said the Rams are optimistic that quarterback Matthew Stafford will return for an 18th NFL season, but the team will wait for the quarterback to make his own announcement. McVay said the Rams would love to stick with Stafford if he wants to come back after his MVP-caliber season in 2025. 

McVay also confirmed he has hired Bubba Ventrone as his new special teams coordinator. He hasn’t decided who will become his offensive coordinator after Mike LaFleur left to become the Cardinals‘ head coach.

Packers add former HC as DC

Ex-Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon is joining the Packers‘ staff as defensive coordinator, the team announced on Feb. 2. Gannon will take over for Jeff Hafley, who left after two seasons when the Dolphins hired him to be their next head coach.

“He possesses tremendous experience as an NFL coordinator and head coach,” Matt LaFleur said in a statement. “I am confident that he will be an outstanding addition to our organization, as well as a strong leader of our defense.”

The Cardinals fired Gannon the day after their season ended with a ninth consecutive loss. Gannon went 15-36 in three years, including a 3-14 record this past season. Gannon had been the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for two seasons before Arizona hired him. In his second season in Philadelphia, the Eagles ranked second in the NFL in total defense and won the NFC championship before losing 38-35 to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles had a franchise-record 70.0 sacks — 15 more than any other NFL team — in 2022. They also had 27 takeaways that season to rank fourth in the league. 

Gannon takes over a defense that ranked 12th in yards allowed per game (311.8), ninth in yards allowed per play (5.0) and 11th in points allowed per game (21.2) this past season. Green Bay’s defense ranked higher earlier in the season but struggled after season-ending injuries to All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt.

Eagles DC Vic Fangio considered retirement

The Eagles nearly had to make two coordinator changes this offseason. Fangio informed the team shortly after their season ended that he planned to retire before the Eagles convinced him to return, PhillyVoice reported on Feb. 1. If Fangio had held firm in his decision to retire, the Eagles were planning to contact former Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon and Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, according to PhillyVoice. Gannon was the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for two seasons (2021-22) before leaving for Arizona in 2023.

Fangio has been widely regarded as one of the top defensive minds in the NFL for several years. The Eagles’ defense has also been one of the game’s top defensive units since Fangio joined the team in 2024, ranking in the top five in scoring in each of the last two years. The Eagles hired Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion to be their next offensive coordinator after parting ways with Kevin Patullo. 

Packers extend coach, multiple executives

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball have joined coach Matt LaFleur in signing multi-year contract extensions. Packers president/CEO Ed Policy announced the extensions for all three on Friday.

The extensions come after the Packers went 9-8-1 and made their third straight playoff appearance, and sixth in the last seven years. A 31-27 loss at Chicago in the NFC wild-card playoff round capped a five-game skid that ended Green Bay’s season, though one of those defeats came when the Packers rested their starters in their regular-season finale.

“We are excited to extend our commitment to Brian, Matt and Russ as the leaders of our football operations,” Policy said in a statement. “Their steadfast dedication, passion and collaboration have remained constant in our drive to compete at the highest level. While we are all disappointed with the way this season ended, we remain aligned in purpose and have spent considerable time over the past weeks collaborating on a path forward.

“I am exceedingly confident we have the right people to achieve our goal. The entire Packers organization looks forward to supporting every effort to bring our community and fans another championship that they very much deserve.”

LaFleur owns a 76-40-1 regular-season record and has led Green Bay to the playoffs in all but one of his seven years on the job. That includes NFC championship game appearances in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Green Bay has been the NFC’s seventh and final playoff seed each of the last three seasons.

As expected, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider has locked up his team’s most explosive playmaker for the foreseeable future. The Seahawks and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, have agreed to a four-year, $168.6 million contract extension.

The average annual salary of $42.15 million makes Smith-Njigba the highest-paid receiver in the league, and the $120 million in guaranteed money is the most ever earned by a receiver in league history. 

With the Super Bowl champs securing the team’s top playmaker through the 2031 season, here are my takeaways:

Seahawks show Smith-Njigba the money, signal he’s best WR in NFL

Seattle exercised Smith-Njigba’s fifth-year option on his rookie contract before signing him to the new deal. Just 24 years old, the Ohio State product set franchise single-season records for receptions (119) and receiving yards (1,793) in 2025. The 1,793 receiving yards are the eighth-most in league history, and his nine 100-yard games led the league during the regular season.

While Kenneth Walker III led Seattle’s offense in the Super Bowl, Smith-Njigba was the primary reason for Sam Darnold’s success in the offense during the year. Smith-Njigba accounted for 44% of Seattle’s receiving yards, the highest percentage by any player in the league. He led Seattle in receiving yards in 16 of 17 games this year, the most in a regular season in NFL history. 

Smith-Njigba also made a seamless transition from slot receiver to outside receiver with DK Metcalf moving on to the Pittsburgh Steelers in an offseason trade. Smith-Njigba led the NFL in catches of at least 20 yards (27) and 40-plus yards (8). 

In 2024, he led the league with 956 receiving yards (with five touchdowns) when aligned in the slot, per Next Gen Stats. But in 2025, Smith-Njigba led the league with 1,378 receiving yards (with eight touchdowns) when aligned out wide.

Schneider signing Smith-Njigba to a historic deal shows his faith in the talented receiver continuing to produce at a high level, along with Seattle’s commitment to develop and retain high-character guys who positively influence other players in the locker room. 

Seahawks focused on keeping foundational talent

Seattle lost a handful of key players from the Super Bowl roster during free agency, with guys like running back Kenneth Walker III, cornerback Coby Bryant, edge rusher Boye Mafe and cornerback Riq Woolen signing lucrative deals with other NFL teams.

While those players were significant contributors to the team’s march to the Lombardi Trophy, including Seattle’s Super Bowl MVP in Walker, the Seahawks deemed them replaceable, partly because of the massive investments that they have to make for other critical players on rookie contracts. Smith-Njigba became extension eligible this offseason, and it only took Seattle a matter of weeks to sign him to a multi-year deal. Next up for the Seahawks is cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who also became extension eligible earlier in March, as Seattle’s other 2023 first-round pick seems set to receive a massive deal. The Seahawks picked up Witherspoon’s fifth-year option when they did the same for Smith-Njigba this past week, looking to keep the standout corner in Seattle for the foreseeable future. 

Back in January, Seattle signed 2022 first-round selection offensive tackle Charles Cross to a four-year, $104.4 million contract extension. And the Seahawks managed to return electric receiver and return man Rashid Shaheed in free agency on a three-year, $51 million deal.

Scheider can’t keep everyone, but so far he has shown which players he deems most important to the long-term sustainable success of his team, seeking to take advantage of a Super Bowl window by whom he’s allocating long-term deals to.

Will Rams star Puka Nacua eclipse Smith-Njigba’s mark? Maybe not anytime soon.

Smith-Njigba was the latest receiver to earn a jaw-dropping contract, continuing to raise the bar as contracts soar with this playmaking position group.

Considered the best receiver at the time, Justin Jefferson signed a new deal that paid him $35 million annually two years ago. Fellow LSU product Ja’Marr Chase bumped that annual salary average to $40.25 million with his new deal last season.

And now Smith-Njigba has raised the floor to $42.15 million. Los Angeles receiver Puka Nacua, in the final year of his rookie contract, is the next receiver in line to receive a life-changing new contract. But league sources I spoke with expressed some skepticism that the Rams will make Nacua the next wide receiver to receive a record-setting contract, at least this offseason.

“I don’t think the Rams are looking to do extensions right now,” an NFL agent told me. “They’re focused on adding to the team only, and players under contract are under contract.”

“The Rams are probably not in a rush to do that deal the way the Seahawks were in a rush to do JSN,” an NFL player familiar with Nacua told me. “Being a leader on and off the field matters even more when you’re the highest-paid guy. YOU ARE the team’s marketing campaign at that point.”

If the Rams don’t extend Nacua this offseason, they might face the possibility of having to place the franchise tag on him next offseason, which won’t come cheap. The franchise tag for receivers of $27.3 million this offseason is the second-highest in the NFL, behind only quarterbacks at $43.4 million. Five years ago, the franchise tag for receivers was $18.4 million.

MLB spring training has commenced with all teams reporting for duty in Arizona and Florida as all 30 teams targeting Opening Day on March 25. 

Rosters are getting finalized and every team’s new offseason additions are getting their reps in — not to mention the much-anticipated World Baseball Classic that will see the world’s best players compete on the international stage. 

Here are all the notable news and last-minute dealings as teams ramp up to Opening Day:

Mar. 23

Pete Crow-Armstrong signs extension 

The Chicago Cubs reportedly signed outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to a multi-year extension. Crow-Armstrong had a breakout season in 2025 when he hit 31 home runs and stole 35 bases. He also hit 95 RBIs and earned his first All-Star nod. Crow-Armstrong made strides as a hitter last season, but his value comes in center field, where he had an MLB-best 427 putouts and earned a Gold Glove.

While the details of Crow-Amstrong’s deal have not been publicized, the star center fielder will be with Chicago for the forseeable future. 

Suzuki to start season on IL after WBC injury

Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki will start the season on the injured list as he recovers from a sprained right knee sustained while playing for Japan in the World Baseball Classic.

The Cubs had previously ruled Suzuki out of Thursday’s opener against Washington. Manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Suzuki is heading to the injured list after spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in the knee in Japan’s loss to Venezuela on March 14 in the WBC quarterfinals.

The 31-year-old Suzuki walked gingerly to the dugout after a headfirst slide into second base when he was caught stealing in the first inning. Suzuki was replaced in center field after the end of that half-inning.

Suzuki is going into the final season of an $85 million, five-year contract. He has hit .269 with 87 home runs and 296 RBIs in 532 games for the Cubs, including a team-leading 103 RBIs with 32 homers in 2025.

The Cubs are adding veteran Michael Conforto to the 40-man roster ahead of the opener. Conforto was a non-roster invitee to spring training. The 33-year-old hit .273 this spring. Conforto batted just .199 with 12 home runs last season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Strider strains oblique, will start on IL

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider will start the season on the injured list because of a strained oblique, the team announced Monday.

Strider had been scheduled to start in Monday’s spring training finale against Pittsburgh before being scratched. Braves manager Walt Weiss told reporters the team is hopeful Strider will miss only a couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old Strider is aiming to take another step forward now that he’s two years removed from right elbow surgery. Strider missed most of 2024 and returned to the majors last year, going 7-14 with a 4.45 ERA in 23 starts.

He went 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings of work in spring training for the Braves as he tries to regain the form he showed in 2023, when the All-Star led the majors with 20 victories and 281 strikeouts.

The injury is the latest setback for Atlanta’s pitching staff, which already has seen starters Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep placed on the 60-day injured list following elbow surgery.

Lux to begin year on IL

Gavin Lux’s debut with the Tampa Bay Rays is going to have to wait.

The club is placing the veteran infielder on injured reserve with a right shoulder impingement. The move means Richie Palacios will make the opening day roster for Tampa Bay.

The Rays acquired Lux from Cincinnati in January as part of a three-team deal that sent outfielder Josh Lowe from Tampa Bay to the Los Angeles Angels. Los Angeles sent left-handed reliever Brock Burke to Cincinnati as part of the swap.

Lux, 28, hit .269 with five homers and 53 RBIs last season with the Reds. A career .256 hitter who won a pair of World Series titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lux agreed to a $5.525 million, one-year contract shortly before being sent to Tampa Bay and can become a free agent after this year’s World Series.

Lux struggled a bit in his first spring training with Tampa Bay, hitting .190 in seven games and had been dealing with what manager Kevin Cash described as a “cranky” right shoulder in recent days.

Blue Jays extend Atkins, Schneider

The Toronto Blue Jays locked in their leadership group Monday by extending manager John Schneider and general manager Ross Atkins. Schneider’s new deal runs through 2028, while Atkins’ covers 2031. The moves follow Toronto’s 94-win season, American League East title and a seven-game World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.

Schneider, 46, has a 303-257 record since taking over in July 2022 and was runner-up for American League manager of the year last season. He is entering his fourth full season as skipper after the Blue Jays picked up his 2026 option last season.

Schneider is the 14th manager in franchise history and succeeded Charlie Montoyo in July 2022, helping guide Toronto to a wild-card berth that season.

The Blue Jays were swept in the wild-card round in 2022 by Seattle and again in 2023 by Minnesota before slipping to a 74-win season in 2024. Toronto rebounded in 2025, securing the division title on the final day of the regular season and advancing to the World Series for the first time since 1993.

Schneider, who is from Princeton, New Jersey, has spent more than two decades with the organization after being drafted by Toronto in 2002 and working his way through the minor league system.

“I am ecstatic to continue leading the Blue Jays as we work to bring our incredible fans a championship team,” Schneider said. “It’s been a privilege to be part of this organization for nearly 25 years, and the work the Blue Jays continue to do excites me every day.”

Trey Yesavage beginning season on injured list

The 22-year-old Blue Jays right-hander will begin the season on the injured list due to right shoulder impingement, per MLB.com. Yesavage, whom Toronto selected with the No. 20 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, made his MLB debut last season. After making just three regular-season starts, Yesavage was an integral part of Toronto winning the American League pennant and reaching Game 7 of the 2025 World Series, recording a combined 3.58 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 27.2 innings pitched in the postseason (five starts/six total appearances).

Gerrit Cole makes first start for Yankees in over a year

Cole returned to a mound to pitch in a game after a 377-day absence and threw a scoreless first inning Wednesday for the Yankees in an exhibition game against the Red Sox. Cole threw 10 pitches, seven for strikes, including six four-seam fastballs that averaged 97.1 mph, ranging from 98.7 mph 96.1 mph. He threw two sliders and a pair of knuckle-curves. His first pitch, a 96.6 mph fastball to Braiden Ward, was bunted to the right side for a single as Cole slid toward the base trying to field it. Ward stole second, held as Kristian Campbell flied out and was caught stealing third by catcher Austin Wells. 

Jason Delay lined a 1-2 fastball into left for a single, and Nathan Hickey grounded out on a first-pitch knuckle-curve.

Pitching with a slight beard — the Yankees relaxed their facial hair policy last year — Cole showed his altered windup, in which he puts his hands over his head. A 35-year-old right-hander, Cole had Tommy John surgery on March 11 last year with Los Angeles Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone projects Cole to make his season debut in late May or early June. Cole is signed to a $324 million, nine-year contract through 2028. He has a 153-80 career record and 3.18 ERA over 317 starts with Pittsburgh (2013-17), Houston (2018-19) and the Yankees (starting in 2020).

Blue Jays lose Berrios to stress fracture

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios won’t be ready for the start of the season after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right elbow.

Berríos had met with Dr. Keith Meister regarding what the Blue Jays were describing as inflammation in his elbow. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Wednesday about Berríos’ diagnosis.

Berríos, 31, went 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 31 appearances for the Blue Jays last season. He ended the season on the injured list and didn’t pitch in the postseason as the Blue Jays made their World Series run.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto to start season opener for Dodgers

The World Series MVP, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, will open the season for the Dodgers at home. Dave Robert, Dodgers general manager, reported at Spring Training that Yamamoto will start on March 26 against Arizona. 

Most recently, he pitched for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, starting two games and ending with a 2.70 ERA. Unfortunatey, Japan’s WBC run was cut short, as they suffered an 8-5 loss against Venezuela in the semifinals. 

Last year, the 27-year-old right-hander is going into his third season with the Dodgers and third season of his career. He pitched 30 games last year, finishing with an elite ERA of 2.49 and 201 strikeouts. In total playoff games, he went 7-0 with an impressive 2.25 ERA in 9 starts.

Mets’ Lindor makes return from hand surgery

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor played for the first time since his hand surgery on Sunday. He clocked a hit in 3 of his at-bats, and added a run to the statsheet in a merciless 8-1 win against the Blue Jays.

The 5-time all-star had surgery on his left hand in the hamate bone, reporting that he felt soreness in his hand and wrist. At first, the healing process was projected to last for six weeks, bleeding into the season and causing a potential absence in the home opener against the Pirates. But alas, he returned early and showed no signs of rust in his return. 

Last year, he hit .267, pouring in 31 homers and 86 RBIs.

Milwaukee’s Priester to miss at least April

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Quinn Priester expects to miss at least the first month of the season as he recovers from a nerve issue.

Priester had been dealing with an apparent wrist problem for much of the spring. Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters that Priester received a diagnosis indicating it was at least partially related to thoracic outlet syndrome.

The right-hander discussed with MLB.com and other reporters on Friday a potential timeline for his return.

“I think in my head late April or May, but I certainly think I’m on the optimistic side — as a player, I want to be back as quick as possible,” Priester said. “Ultimately I’ll trust whatever the scheduling is there to make sure we do it right, so then we don’t run into anything else trying to rush it back.”

Priester, 25, said he was relieved that he finally knew exactly what was bothering him. “I feel like we’ve kind of been dancing around what some of these issues were,” he said. “Just to have a clear path forward I think is really good.”

Priester had a breakthrough season last year after the Brewers acquired him from the Boston Red Sox in early April. He went 13-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 29 appearances, including 24 starts. Priester won 12 straight decisions at one point, and the Brewers won 19 straight games (16 starts and three appearances following an opener) in which he pitched.

7 players have contracts automatically renewed

AL Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz’s contract was renewed by the Athletics, and shortstop Elly De La Cruz’s deal was set unilaterally by the Cincinnati Reds for the second straight season.

Seven pre-arbitration players in all had their salaries specified by their teams, including two A’s, according to contract information obtained by The Associated Press. The total is the fewest in the major leagues since at least 2012.

Kurtz was renewed at $785,000 while in major leagues — $5,000 above the minimum — and $324,839 in the unlikely event he is sent back to the minors. He made his major league debut last April 23 and hit .290 with 36 homers and 86 RBIs, then was a unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year. Kurtz earned $649,677 from a contract that paid at a rate of the then-minimum $760,000 while in the major leagues, and $123,900 while in the minors.

Right-hander J.T. Gunn also was renewed by the A’s, at $785,000/$352,641.

De La Cruz will make $800,000 this season while in the major leagues and $385,000 in the minors. He was renewed at $770,000 while in the major leagues last year, $10,000 above the minimum, and set career bests with a .264 average and 86 RBIs along with 22 homers and 37 stolen bases.

Kurtz also earned $1,297,017 last year from the pre-arbitration bonus pool established in 2022 and De La Cruz $631,080.

Also renewed were New York Mets right-hander Jonah Tong ($780,000/$127,100), Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas ($805,700/$385,000), Colorado right-hander Victor Vodnik ($790,000/$382,500) and St. Louis shortstop Masyn Winn ($799,450/$385,425).

Hader begins 2026 on IL

Houston Astros All-Star closer Josh Hader will begin the season on the 15-day injured list, manager Joe Espada told reporters Wednesday.

Hader, who dealt with biceps tendinitis while throwing bullpen sessions in the offseason, didn’t pitch after Aug. 8 last year because of a shoulder capsule strain. He had progressed to throwing and playing catch but the 31-year-old left-hander has not appeared in any spring training games and his buildup will extend past the Astros’ opener against the Los Angeles Angles on March 26.

Hader was 6-2 with 28 saves in 29 chances with a 2.05 ERA in 48 appearances last season, his second since joining the Astros as a free agent for a $95 million, five-year contract.

It is unclear yet who will replace Hader as closer early in the season. Right-hander Bryan Abreu, who had a career-high seven saves last year and has 16 in seven big league seasons, is an option.

White Sox, Italy catcher Teel out 4-6 weeks

Chicago White Sox catcher Kyle Teel has a right hamstring strain and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks, general manager Chris Getz told reporters on Wednesday.

Teel, 24, injured his hamstring playing for Italy during its 8-6 upset of the U.S. on Tuesday night in the World Baseball Classic. On a double down the right-field line, Teel appeared to tweak his hamstring while rounding first base. He left the field under his own power with athletic trainers.

Teel, acquired from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade during the 2024 offseason, appeared in 78 games for the White Sox last season. Teel hit .273 with eight home runs, 11 doubles and 35 RBIs while walking 37 times in 297 plate appearances.

Edgar Quero, who appeared in 111 games for Chicago last season, is expected to handle the bulk of the catching innings with Teel sidelined. Quero hit .268 with five home runs, 17 doubles and 36 RBIs in 403 plate appearances last season.

The Cincinnati Reds‘ ace will be out until at least July, as Greene will have surgery on Wednesday to remove bone chips in his right elbow, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Last week, it was revealed that Greene was having an MRI after experiencing discomfort in his pitching elbow.

Greene, a 2024 All-Star, was limited to 19 regular-season starts in 2025 due to a groin injury. That said, in the 19 regular-season starts that Greene made, he recorded a 2.76 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 132 strikeouts and 4.4 wins above replacement across 107.2 innings pitched.

Philadelphia announced that it has extended the left-hander to a five-year deal, which is worth $135 million, according to ESPN. The deal also includes a club option for 2032. Last season, which was the southpaw’s first season in Philadelphia, Luzardo posted a 3.92 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 3.9 wins above replacement and 216 strikeouts across 183.2 innings pitched in the regular season (32 starts).

The Nationals have reportedly signed right-hander Zack Littell to a one-year, $7 million deal that could reach $9.5 million in incentives. In a 2025 campaign split between the Rays and Reds, Littell posted a combined 3.81 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 3.2 wins above replacement across 186.2 innings pitched (32 starts).

Skubal, Tigers Won’t Talk Deal Till End of Season

Before his start for Team USA at the World Baseball Classic, two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal discussed his long-term future with the Tigers. The two-time AL Cy Young winner won his $32 million arbitration case this season amid talks of a potential new deal.

“There is no offer,” Skubal told USA Today Sports, “and there won’t be an offer until the end of the season. … My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year. I’ll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year, and then we’ll kind of see. And that’s fine. It’s their decision.”

The TIgers are aiming to make a deep October run with Skubal leading a rotation that includes newly signed Framber Valdez (three-year, $115 million contract) and 2025 All-Star Casey Mize. The TIgers also brought back back three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander.

Jeremy Peña’s WBC status unclear

The Houston Astros sent All-Star shortstop Jeremy Pena to see a hand specialist on Thursday for further examination of an injury to his right ring finger that has made his immediate availability for the World Baseball Classic unclear.

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters at the team’s spring training complex that Peña had some damage to the nail area on the finger after fielding a hard groundball for the Dominican Republic national team during an exhibition game on Wednesday. Peña was pulled after that.

The Dominican Republic plays its first game of the WBC on Friday in Miami against Nicaragua.

The 28-year-old Peña is coming off a career-best season in 2025, when he made his first All-Star team and batted .304 with an .840 OPS and 20 stolen bases.

Greene to undergo MRI on pitching elbow

Right-hander Hunter Greene has left the Cincinnati Reds‘ spring training camp due to right elbow stiffness.

Manager Terry Francona and president of baseball operations Nick Krall told reporters on Wednesday that Greene will have an MRI in Cincinnati and be examined by team orthopedic consultant Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Greene also will consult with Los Angeles Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

Expected to be the Reds’ ace, Greene added more lower-body work to his offseason routine in hopes of avoiding injuries.

Greene went 7-4 with a 2.76 ERA last year, helping Cincinnati earn an NL wild card for its first playoff appearance since 2020. Greene whose 99.5 mph average four-seam fastball velocity led the major leagues among those throwing at least 1,250 pitches, was limited to a career-low 19 starts and 107.2 innings. Still, his 296 pitches of 100 mph or higher were second in the major leagues behind Mason Miller’s 422.

Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 9 with a right groin strain. He returned on May 23 and made three starts before going back on the IL with the same injury. This time, he was sidelined until Aug. 13.

Greene, 26, is entering his fifth big ;eague season. He made the NL All-Star team for the first time in 2024 while going 9-5 with a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts. He also had 169 strikeouts in 150.1 innings despite spending time on the IL that year with elbow soreness.

Dodgers Gavin Stone deals with shoulder discomfort

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone won’t throw for the next couple of weeks as he deals with a discomfort in his throwing shoulder.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Tuesday that a scan showed inflammation but no structural damage, an encouraging sign in Stone’s comeback.

Stone, 27, didn’t pitch last season after shoulder surgery on Oct. 9, 2024. The right-hander went 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 25 starts in 2024 before the shoulder injury shut him down.

Braves Profar suspended for PEDs

Atlanta outfielder Jurickson Profar faces a 162-game suspension by Major League Baseball for a possible second failed test for a performance-enhancing drug, a person familiar with the issue told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the process, first reported by ESPN, was ongoing.

Profar intends to ask the players’ association to file a grievance to appeal any discipline to baseball’s independent arbitrator, Martin F. Scheinman, a second person familiar with the process said, also on condition of anonymity, because no announcement had been made.

An All-Star in 2024, Profar was suspended for 80 games last March following a positive test for Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone that helps production of testosterone. He issued a statement then saying: “I would never willingly take a banned substance, but I take full responsibility and accept MLB’s decision.”

Because this would be Profar’s second infraction, an appeal would take place after a suspension was announced.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol will not be a lame-duck in 2026. Marmol and the team signed a two-year extension that will keep him under contract through at least the 2028 season on Sunday. There’s also a club option for the 2029 season.

“As I’ve gotten to know Oli, I’ve seen someone who cares about this organization and knows what has made the Cardinals special over time, and who understands that for us to get where we need to go, we must compete relentlessly to set new standards in everything that we do,” Cardinals president Chaim Bloom said in a statement. “He is invested in the progress of our young core and is unafraid to challenge himself and to help those around him grow.”

The 39-year-old Marmol has led the Cardinals for the past four seasons, taking them to the National League wild-card round in his first season as manager. But he has failed to return to the playoffs the last three years, and St. Louis was just 78-84 last season.

The Cardinals underwent a pretty massive roster rebuild this offseason, trading the likes of Brendan Donovan, Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray. So, the deal seemingly ensures that Marmol’s job is safe for a bit as St. Louis goes through a rebuild.

Giants Devers misses game against Dodgers

The San Francisco Giants scratched slugger Rafael Devers from the starting lineup because of a tight hamstring, keeping him out a spring training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

The three-time All-Star and 2018 World Series champion is starting his first full season with the Giants after they acquired him in a trade with the Boston Red Sox last year. Devers hit 35 home runs and had 109 RBIs last season, playing 90 games with San Francisco and 73 in Boston. He signed a $313.5 million, 10-year contract in 2023 with the Red Sox.

He was 20 when he made his major league debut in Boston nine years ago and the following year, he helped them win the World Series.

Devers, who has 235 career homers and 747 RBIs, led Boston in RBIs for five straight seasons and has finished in the top 20 in voting for AL MVP five times.

Max Scherzer re-signs with Blue Jays

Max Scherzer has agreed to a deal to return to the World Series runner-up Toronto Blue Jays, according to a report from the New York Post. The 41-year-old pitcher joined Toronto on a one-year, $15.5 million deal in 2025. Scherzer was limited to just 17 starts during the 2025 season, but he was an asset for the Blue Jays in the postseason, most notably picking up a win in Game 4 of the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners, where he held Seattle to two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Scherzer also made two starts in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. 

Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young-winner and eight-time All-Star, has won two World Series titles, most recently in 2023.

Verlander and Valdez will receive the final payments from their new contracts with the Tigers in 2039, with the team deferring $31 million of the $128 million it committed to the pitchers.

Verlander’s $13 million, one-year deal will pay the 43-year-old right-hander $2 million this year. The $11 million in deferred money due the three-time Cy Young Award winner will be paid in $1.1 million installments each June 30 from 2030-39, according to contract terms obtained by The Associated Press. Valdez’s $115 million, three-year agreement includes a $20 million signing bonus paid in $2 million installments each June 15 from 2030-39. He gets salaries of $17.5 million this year and $37.5 million in 2027. The deal includes a $35 million player option for 2028 and a $40 million mutual option for 2029 with a $5 million buyout. Valdez’s salary each year from 2027 to 2029 can increase based on awards in the immediate preceding season as long as he doesn’t finish the prior season on the injured list. A salary would go up by $2 million if he wins a Cy Young Award, $1 million if he finishes second and $500,000 if he comes in third. It could also escalate by $2 million for winning World Series MVP and $1 million for winning ALCS MVP.

Austin’s return to MLB delayed

Tyler Austin’s return to the major leagues has been put on hold for what Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell says will be months following a procedure on his right knee. Counsell said Wednesday that Austin had a patellar tendon debridement procedure on his right knee Tuesday and will need a lengthy recovery period.

Austin, 34, signed a one-year deal with Chicago after spending six seasons with Yokohama in Japan’s Pacific League. He was competing for playing time at designated hitter and also can play first base and the outfield.

Austin was selected by the New York Yankees in the 2010 amateur draft and on Aug. 13, 2016, combined Aaron Judge to become the first teammates to homer in their first major league at-bats in the same game.

Austin also played for Minnesota, Seattle and Milwaukee. and has hit .219 with 33 homers in four seasons in the majors. He was part of the 2021 U.S. Olympic team.

His injury could create an opening for Michael Conforto to earn a bench spot on the team after Conforto agreed to a minor league deal on Monday.

Atlanta has extended the star left-hander on a one-year, $27 million deal, per ESPN. The deal includes a $30 million club option for 2028. Sale, a nine-time All-Star, won the 2024 National League Cy Young Award in his first season with the Braves. Last season (2025), he was limited to 21 appearances (20 starts) due to a rib injury. Sale posted a 2.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 165 strikeouts, 161 ERA+ and 4.0 wins above replacement across 125 2/3 innings pitched.

Pauley’s bid to start at third base for the Marlins is on hold due to right forearm tightness. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Pauley had an MRI on Monday morning and has been shut down pending the results. 

Pauley is a left-hander hitter and the soreness is in his throwing arm. Pauley was expected to compete with Connor Norby at third base but has not appeared in a spring game due to the persistent tightness in his forearm. Pauley, 25, hit .224 with four homers in 161 at-bats as a rookie in 2025. 

McCullough told MLB.com some discomfort at the start of spring training is not unusual for players. McCullough said Pauley’s forearm tightness “just didn’t get any better over the course of a couple days. … He’s going to be shut down from baseball until we get a clearer picture on what’s happening.”

The Cubs are adding some outfield depth early in spring training, signing Conforto to a Minor League non-roster invite, the New York Post reported. Conforto, who’ll turn 33 on March 1, has largely been a plus hitter at the plate in his career. He hit .251 with a .804 OPS over the first 10 years of his career. However, he struggled with the Dodgers last season, hitting .199 with a .637 OPS and 12 homers over 138 games.

Los Angeles has claimed Suwinski off waivers from the Pirates, per multiple reports. Suwinski spent the first four seasons of his career with the Pirates (2022-25), most notably totaling 26 home runs, 74 RBIs and a 113 OPS+ in 2023 before being up and down from the major leagues from 2024-25. He was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Feb. 16. Should Suwinski, who has MLB starting experience at all three outfield positions, crack the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster, he’d join an outfield rotation that includes free agent signee Kyle Tucker, Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages, among others.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner is still a free agent, but the Blue Jays are showing the most interest, Sper portsnet. The two sides have been discussing a one-year deal that could strengthen Toronto’s pitching staff’s depth. 

Scherzer played a key role in the clubhouse’s energy a year ago, helping set the tone that propelled the team to the World Series. He started 17 regular-season games and three in the playoffs, posting a 5.19 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 85 innings, with another 14.1 innings of 3.77 ERA ball in the postseason. 

The Blue Jays added multiple starters to their rotation over the offseason, bringing in Dylan Cease on a seven-year, $210 million contract, as well as Cody Ponce from the KBO on a three-year, $30 million deal. Midseason trade acquisition and former Cy Young Shane Bieber will begin 2026 in the rotation, as well, and top prospect and postseason star Trey Yesavage is also slated to be in the starting five out of spring training.

Minnesota’s right-hander will have season-ending Tommy John elbow surgery. The team said Friday that López’s surgery will be performed next week in Texas by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister. López turns 30 early next month. It will be the second Tommy John surgery for López. He had the procedure as a minor leaguer with the Seattle organization and missed the 2014 season. 

López ended a bullpen session early during the Twins‘ first full-squad workout Monday. First-year manager Derek Shelton said he was hopeful the move was precautionary, but a day later general manager Jeremy Zoll told reporters of the UCL tear. López was the Twins’ opening-day for the past three years and was planning to pitch for Venezuela in next month’s World Baseball Classic.

He made the All-Star team in his first year with Minnesota and helped the franchise end a record 18-game postseason losing streak for North American professional sports, going 2-0 with an 0.71 ERA in two starts in the 2023 playoffs. A shoulder injury limited him to 14 starts last season after he made 32 in each of three consecutive 10-win seasons, the first in his final season with the Marlins. López is making $21.75 million this season and is signed through next year.

Westburg has been unable to take part in spring training after a right oblique injury during the offseason, and it was unclear Thursday whether an elbow issue also was keeping him off the field. Now, we have clarity on the matter, as Orioles general manager Mike Elias revealed on Friday morning that the versatile infielder has a partial UCL tear in his right elbow and will be out through April, per MLB.com. Westburg will be getting a PRP injection on Friday.

“He’s just unable to participate right now,” first-year manager Craig Albernaz told reporters Thursday. “He’s getting evaluated by our medical team and also outside people to make sure we have a plan in place, and see what’s going on with Jordan to get him going.”

When asked whether it was the oblique or a new elbow issue for Westburg, the manager replied, “Just physically unable to go.”

Albernaz was also asked whether there was a fear that any issues for Westburg would be worse than originally thought. “Just want to make sure that we do our due diligence and make sure Jordan is in the best chance to play this year,” Albernaz said.

Westburg, 27, hit .265 with 17 homers and 41 RBs in 85 games last season, when he missed time with a left hamstring strain and a right ankle sprain. He hit .265 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs in 107 games in 2024, when he appeared in the All-Star Game two weeks before sustaining a broken right hand when getting hit by a pitch.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy gets new deal

Murphy has reportedly agreed to a new three-year deal to remain at the helm in Milwaukee, per The Athletic. The 67-year-old skipper and reigning NL Manager of the Year will now stay in Milwaukee through at least the 2028 season, with a deal that includes a club option for 2029.

“I’m sincerely grateful I have a locker,” Murphy told MLB.com on Thursday. “Getting to be part of the Brewers‘ organization for the last 10 years has been a great journey. Getting to continue in this position is an honor.”

Murphy has led the Brewers to two straight NL Central crowns, while also being the team’s bench coach when it won the division in 2023. He took over in 2024 when Craig Counsell bolted for the Cubs.  

Kwan will get some time in center field during spring training, as manager Stephen Vogt assesses the best possible outfield combination. Kwan is a four-time Gold Glove winner in left field. That is tied with Kenny Lofton for the most Gold Gloves in franchise history by an outfielder. Vogt told reporters on Thursday that Kwan has expressed an interest in playing center at times. Kwan was primarily a center field in Cleveland’s minor-league system but has seen action there in only eight games over his five seasons in the majors.

Rookie Chase DeLauter, who made his big-league debut in last season’s AL wild-card series against the Tigers, could see time in center and right. DeLauter dropped a high fly hit by Detroit’s Gleyber Torres during the first inning in his first game. Three innings later, he made a pinpoint throw to third base, where Zach McKinstry was tagged out by Jose Ramirez. George Valera will likely play left field during Cactus League games. Kwan, a two-time All-Star, and Ramírez were the lone consistent offensive threats on the Guardians last season as they repeated as AL Central Division champions.

Graterol won’t be ready for the start of the 2026 regular season, manager Dave Roberts revealed, per The Athletic. Graterol hasn’t pitched for Los Angeles since the 2024 World Series due to a shoulder injury, and the Dodgers continue to “take things slow” with the right-hander, with the aim of him pitching at some point in the 2026 season. In a combined 181 innings pitched with the Dodgers (2020-24), Graterol has recorded a 2.69 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.

The Padres have signed Buehler to a minor league deal. After seven seasons with the Dodgers, including two World Series victories, Buehler struggled in 2025. He started 22 games for the Red Sox, earning a 7-7 record. The Red Sox released him midseason, and the Phillies picked him up before the end of the season. 

Mike Trout wants to return to center field for Angels

Trout says he would prefer to return to center field for the Angels, and the star slugger says he will skip the WBC because of insurance issues. The 11-time All-Star, who has been plagued by injuries since 2021, says his familiar position isn’t as physically demanding as the corner outfield spots, contrary to traditional thinking.

Trout played his most games since 2019 last season, finishing at 130. The three-time American League MVP started 22 of his first 29 games in right field before a knee injury sidelined him for a month. The 34-year-old was exclusively a designated hitter when he returned in late May.

Trout had 26 home runs but hit just .232, by far the worst average of his career when he had at least 400 at-bats.

He spent time in left field early in his career but was a center fielder for 11 consecutive seasons before the switch to right. Injuries limited Trout to 111 games the previous two years.

Trout said conversations with first-year manager Kurt Suzuki have included the idea of a return to center.

“I feel like I’m at my best when I’m in center,” Trout told reporters at the club’s spring training facility Monday. “If I have to go to the corner, I’ll go to the corner.”

Trout believes a return to center will be good for his health.

Padres extend GM A.J. Preller

The Padres have agreed on a multiyear contract extension with their general manager, who has the second-longest tenure among baseball operations chiefs in the big leagues behind Brian Cashman of the Yankees.

The Padres, who announced the deal Monday without disclosing terms, have made the postseason four of the past six years following a stretch of 13 seasons without reaching the playoffs that started in 2007, seven years before the club hired Preller. Cashman has been general manager of the Yankees since 1998.

The 48-year-old Preller, who also has the title of president of baseball operations, has presided over the free agent signings of Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts; trades that landed the likes of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan Soto; and a farm system that produced center fielder Jackson Merrill, who was an All-Star as a rookie in 2024.

The Padres are coming off consecutive 90-win seasons for the first time in club history and have set attendance records at Petco Park each of the past three seasons. San Diego reached the National League championship series in 2022, losing to Philadelphia in five games.

“Under his guidance, our organization has continued to invest in elite talent at both the major and minor league levels while building a strong baseball operations, scouting and player development group,” Padres chairman John Seidler said. “We are confident he will continue to tirelessly pursue the first World Series championship for San Diego.”

San Diego is signing Castellanos to a one-year deal two days after the veteran outfielder was released by the Phillies, according to The Athletic. Castellanos, who will primarily play first base for the Padres, was released by the Phillies prior to entering the final season of a five-year, $100 million deal. Last season, the 33-year-old right fielder totaled 17 home runs, 72 RBIs and -0.8 wins above replacement, while posting a .250/.294/.400 slash line. 

The Padres have also signed Canning to a one-year deal. Canning made 16 starts last season for the Mets, posting a 3.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP before suffering a season-ending ruptured left Achilles tendon.

Feb. 13

The right-hander has signed a one-year, $22 million deal to stay with the Diamondbacks, per multiple reports. Gallen, a 2023 All-Star, posted a career-high 4.83 ERA last season. From 2022-24, he averaged a 3.20 ERA and 1.09 WHIP per season and was the D-backs’ ace en route to them winning the National League pennant in 2023.

Hader played catch again Friday after the six-time All-Star left-hander dealt with biceps tendinitis while throwing bullpen sessions in the offseason. Astros manager Joe Espada said Hader, who missed the end of last season with a shoulder capsule strain, had stopped playing catch after a series of offseason bullpens before getting to Florida for the start of spring training this week. The 31-year-old Hader was 6-2 with 28 saves and a 2.05 ERA in 48 appearances last season, his second since joining the Astros in free agency. His last game was a two-inning outing against the Yankees on Aug. 8, which was before Houston missed the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.

The Blue Jays acquired outfielder Jesús Sánchez from the Astros for outfielder Joey Loperfido on Friday. The 28-year-old Sánchez hit .237 with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs in 134 games last season between the Marlins and Astros. The left-handed hitter has 73 home runs in 580 games over six major league seasons. 

Loperfido, 26, split last season between Toronto and Triple-A Buffalo, batting .333 in 41 games with the Blue Jays. He has appeared in 122 career major league contests between Houston and Toronto.

Feb. 12

Hernandez has signed a one-year deal worth $4.5 million to stay with the Dodgers through the season. Hernandez, 34, has played nine of his 12 major league seasons with the Dodgers. Last season, he hit .203 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 92 games during which he played in the outfield, first base, second base and third base.

Philadelphia announced that it has released Castellanos. It was reported that Philly was trying to trade the right fielder, but it was to no avail. Castellanos, a two-time All-Star, was reportedly told not to report to the Phillies’ spring training facility as the parties worked toward a resolution. Castellanos is coming off a 2025 campaign where he totaled 17 HRs, 72 RBIs and a career-low -0.8 wins above replacement, while posting a .250/.294/.400 slash line.

The Dodgers have signed Muncy to a one-year, $10 million guaranteed extension, the team announced. It includes a $7 million salary for 2027 and a $10 million team option for 2028. Last season, Muncy, a two-time All-Star who has won three World Series with the Dodgers, totaled 19 home runs, 67 RBIs and 3.6 wins above replacement in 100 regular-season wins, while posting a .243/.376/.460 slash line. He missed time due to knee and oblique injuries. Muncy then hit three home runs in the postseason en route to the Dodgers winning the 2025 World Series.

Feb. 11

The O’s and pitcher Bassitt agreed to a one-year deal worth $18.5 million. Bassitt spent the last three seasons with the Blue Jays. In 2025, he finished 11-9 with a 3.96 earned runs average. Bassitt was an All-Star with the Athletics during the 2021 season and led the American League with 16 wins in 2023. 

The Mets are optimistic Lindor will recover for opening day after having surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his left hand. He’s the third prominent player to suffer hamate bone injuries in the opening week of spring training.

Carroll won’t play for Team USA in the WBC after breaking his right hamate bone in batting practice. He’s having surgery for the injury and could begin the 2026 regular season on the injured list. A two-time All-Star who was set to play in his first WBC for Team USA, Carroll led the National League in triples in each of the past three seasons.

The former No. 1 draft pick will have surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his right hand and will miss Opening Day. O’s president of baseball operations Mike Elias said that Holliday sustained the injury during batting practice. He also said that third baseman Jordan Westburg is recovering from a right oblique injury that could delay his participation in spring training games. Holliday, 22, hit .242 with 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 2025.

The switch-hitting outfielder will miss the next five-to-six months due to left labral surgery. Santander, who’s entering the second season of a five-year, $92.5 million deal, was limited to just 59 combined games in 2025 (regular and postseason) due to a shoulder injury. In the regular season, he totaled just six home runs, 18 RBIs and -1 wins above replacement, while posting a .175/.271/.294 slash line. In 2024, Santander was an All-Star for the Orioles, hitting a career-high 44 home runs and averaging 35 home runs and 95.3 RBIs per season from 2022-24.

Rockies‘ Kris Bryant on 60-Day IL

The Rockies will continue to be without one of their oft-injured big signings through at least two months after Bryant landed on the 60-day injured list due to a degenerative lumbar disc disease (lower back). The slugger has appeared in just 170 games with the Rockies since agreeing to a $182 million, seven-year contract in March 2022.

In other news, the Rockies added Japanese pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano to their rotation, agreeing to a $5.1 million, one-year deal with the right-hander. Sugano, 36, went 10-10 with a 4.64 ERA in 30 starts with the Orioles last year. He pitched in Japan before agreeing to a $13 million, one-year contract with the O’s in December 2024. Sugano played for the Yomiuri Giants for 12 seasons, winning three MVPs in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Central League.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns announced that Soto will be shifting from right field to left field next season. Soto has extensive experience at both corner outfield positions but has primarily started in right field over the last two years. Last season was Soto’s first with the Mets and saw him total -7 defensive runs saved in right field. At the same time, the six-time Silver Slugger totaled a career-high 43 home runs, 105 RBIs, a National League-high 38 stolen bases and 6.2 wins above replacement, while posting a .263/.396/.525 slash line.

It’s a full-circle moment for the 43-year-old future Hall of Famer, who returns to the club where he became a breakout star. The three-time Cy Young winner inked a one-year deal with the Tigers for $13 million. Verlander’s 266 wins are tied for 34th on baseball’s career list, while his 3,553 career strikeouts are eighth and closely trailing Don Sutton with 3,574. Verlander now bolsters an already stacked rotation that includes two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and Framber Valdez, who also signed with Detroit in free agency. Verlander was traded to Houston in August 2017 and helped the Astros win the World Series that same year and again in 2022. Now he gets an opportunity to chase a third championship with the Tigers, who are looking for the franchise’s first title since 1984.

Feb. 9

Marte said he remains happy staying with Arizona despite an offseason of speculation that the All-Star could be traded. “We talked a lot and hashed some things out, talked it all through and everything is great,” Marte said ahead of reporting to spring training early. “[GM] Mike [Hazen] knows I love the D-backs, I love my teammates. Everyone knows what type of player I am, and I’m just happy it all worked out and [that] I’m here.”

Hazen said that he did listen to offers but that a potential deal “never ended getting that close.” 

“I felt like I had to do my job just to listen to what people had to say,” Hazen said. “He’s a superstar player for us, and has been for a long time, and is going to continue to be.”

In his nine seasons for the Diamondbacks, Marte has made three All-Star teams, won two Silver Slugger Awards, finished third (2024) and fourth (2019) in NL MVP Award voting, as well as being named MVP of the 2023 National League Championship Series. Marte will take part in the WBC for the Dominican Republic. 

Saalfrank will miss the season after shoulder surgery. The 28-year-old was expected to be an important part of the team’s bullpen after compiling a 1.24 ERA over 28 appearances last season. It’s another hit for the pitching staff, which already is without relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez, along with ace starter Corbin Burnes, for the first few months of the season. All three are recovering from elbow surgery and hope to be back during the summer. Saalfrank called the surgery a “tough pill to swallow,” adding that “the game of baseball can be a brutal one, but it’s also given me some of the best moments of my life, and I don’t expect that to change moving forward.”

The bigger story for La Pulga may be if Messi can also captain Argentina to back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles this summer, when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off across North America.

March 22: Messi scores key goal in 3-2 win against NYCFC

Inter Miami took home the win against NYCFC on Sunday with Lionel Messi scoring the equalizer. 

At the 61-minute mark, Messi received a free kick, after what most fans believed was a “soft call.” He successfully converted in this opportunity, tying the game and putting the Herons back in contention for a win that night. 

The first goal of the night came from Gonzalo Lujan, with this also being his first career goal. The game was then iced in the 74th minute by Micael after a set-up by Messi’s corner kick.  Micael dos Santos’

March 18: 900 Career Goals (!) But Eliminated From CONCACAF Champions Cup

What a milestone for the superstar who has now reached the 900-goal mark in his illustrious club career that has spanned Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami – as well as his international duty with Argentina.

Messi scored the goal in Wednesday’s Champions Cup match against Nashville SC, taking a pass in the middle of the box in the seventh minute, controlled the ball, spun and lined a low shot through a maze of defenders and into the far corner of the net.

Despite the historic goal, Nashville tied Inter Miami 1-1, advancing to the tournament quarterfinals on an away-goal tiebreaker. The teams played to a 0-0 tie in Nashville last week, the opening leg of the Round of 16 matchup.

Messi is second on the all-time goal scoring list behind Cristiano Ronaldo (965), with those two the only ones who are in that stratosphere. Officially the duo are followed by Romário (765), Pelé (762) and Ference Puskás (725). The next-highest active player is Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski (690).  There is some controversy about Pelé’s count. Different sources, counting different sets of games, list the Brazilian icon’s goal totals anywhere from around 650 in league matches to somewhere near 1,300 in all matches — some against low-level competition.

March 14: Messi Sits Out Inter Miami Draw; Mascherano Sent Off

Lionel Messi was rested for this game, as head coach Javier Mascherano chose to save his energy for the second CONCACAF Champions Cup leg against Nashville SC. The race for his 900th goal was, once again, put on pause. In his place, Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez received his first start of the MLS season.

Though Saturday ended in a scoreless draw, the game itself stayed spirited. In a heated exchange, Mascherano received a red card in stoppage time. As he protested the booking, he was sent off for foul and offensive language. Ever a lively personality, he sarcastically clapped at the Charlotte FC crowd. 

Messi and Inter Miami will play Nashville SC again in their second leg of the CONCACAF Championship Cup’s Round of 16 on March 18, 4:00 pm PT.

March 11: Messi Stuck At 899 goals After Draw With Nashville  

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi faced off against Nashville SC in the Herons’ first game of the CONCACAF Champions Cup of the season. The Round of 16 ended in a scoreless draw, with Messi staying silent on the statsheet. 

With the potential to snag his 900th overall career goal, he attempted one shot in the 55th minute. Unfortunately, this feat was put on hold as the 24-year-old goalkeeper Brian Schwake came up with the save. 

The teams will face off on March 18 in Fort Lauderdale at Chase Stadium to decide which team will move into the quarterfinal round. 

March 7: Messi Scores In Win Over D.C. United After White House Visit

Lionel Messi scored in the 27th minute, and Inter Miami held on for a 2-1 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night in front of 72,026 at the home of the NFL‘s Baltimore Ravens.

The game was held in downtown Baltimore instead of at D.C. United’s smaller venue in Washington. It’s the second game this season where Inter Miami’s opponents held the match at a larger stadium. LAFC did so in February by changing the game to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

It was an eventful week for Messi and his team, which visited the White House on Thursday. Inter Miami opened the scoring in the 17th minute when De Paul collected the ball about 15 yards from the goal and struck a shot into the far side of the net.

Messi then scored his third goal of the young MLS season, slipping behind the D.C. defense to receive Mateo Silvetti‘s pass, then flicking the ball with one touch past goalie Sean Johnson.

March 1: Messi Scores Twice in Comeback Win Over Florida Rivals Orlando City

Nothing like scoring twice against your in-state rivals. Especially after being initially down by two.

Messi had two second-half goals and an assist in Inter Miami’s 4-2 win over Orlando City. It was his first two goals of the 2026 MLS season and the Herons’ first win. It was part of a four-goal rally by Inter Miami in the second half, which also included goals by Mateo Silvetti and Telasco Segovia (who also had two assists). 

Marco Pasalic and Martín Ojedahad initially gave the Lions the lead before Messi and Miami came out with a full head of steam after halftime. Messi’s second was a particular beauty as it came off a free kick in the final moments of the game in Orlando. Messi, ever the master at gamesmanship, decided to troll the Orlando faithful by mockingly giving them an autograph.

Feb. 26: Messi Knocked Over By Pitch Invader In Chaotic Friendly In Puerto Rico

A curiously timed match between Inter Miami and Ecuadorian club Independiente Del Valle at Puerto Rico’s Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel saw Messi convert a penalty and later tackled by an overzealous pitch invader.

The game in Bayamón was supposed to be played in Inter Miami’s preseason on Feb. 13 but was moved back due to Messi’s hamstring injury. Inter Miami honored the rescheduled match after having already played its MLS season opener.

Messi entered at halftime and was cheered loudly anytime he touched the ball. His penalty came in the 70th minute, which sealed the 2-1 victory in the unofficial match. But as the game came to a wrap, a pitch invader got tangled up with Messi and a security guard – taking the superstar to the ground. He seemed to be fine as he got up and walked away. 

Feb. 21: Messi Held Scoreless As LAFC Wins Historic MLS Opener

Inter Miami began its season with a 3-0 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum against Son Heung-min and LAFC. In front of an announced crowd of 75,672 – the second-highest game attendance in MLS history and highest for a season-opening game ever. 

After the game, a video posted on social media showed Messi following the referees through the tunnel and into a locker room. A visibly angry Messi appeared to be held back by teammate Luis Suarez with the two then exiting the area. The league said that Messi did not violate any policy and that he would not face any suspension. 

Cristiano Ronaldo has taken to social media to provide a positive update on his fitness as he continues his rehabilitation from a muscle injury.

The Al-Nassr superstar is currently sidelined after picking up a thigh problem, but his latest activity suggests that a return to action is not far away.

Rebuilding behind closed doors

The footballing world was handed a scare in late February when Ronaldo limped out of Al-Nassr’s Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Fayha with a substantial tear in his right hamstring. Since the setback, the 41-year-old has been undergoing a tailored rehabilitation programm, recently taking to social media to share images of himself performing targeted leg muscle exercises and upper-body stretching.

These updates serve as a vital reassurance to fans, as the injury initially threatened to disrupt what has been another remarkable individual campaign. Despite his age, Ronaldo has remained Al-Nassr’s primary goal threat this season, netting 22 goals and providing four assists across 26 appearances in all competitions.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo’s international future was in jeopardy,

Martinez confirmed: “The World Cup is not at risk! He’s not at risk, no. It’s a minor muscle injury and we think he can return in a week or two. Everything Cristiano has done physically during the season shows that he’s in great shape. Bernardo Silva, it’s a technical decision, based on the medical information that the player’s club provided.”

Opportunities for Portugal’s youth

The absence of such legendary figures opens the door for the next generation of Portuguese talent to prove their worth on the global stage. Martinez is viewing this international window as a crucial experimental phase, he added: “I’ve already said that this stage is to take advantage of to experiment with new players, it’s the time to experiment and be able to call up players who also deserve it. Tottenham Hotspur have identified Roberto De Zerbi as a primary target to take over the managerial reins.

The former Brighton and Marseille head coach is reportedly open to the move to north London. However, any potential deal hinges entirely on a massive caveat: Spurs must successfully fight off relegation and retain their top-flight status for next season.

Talks underway for Spurs job

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham have already held talks with De Zerbi regarding the permanent head coach position. The Italian tactician is currently out of work after departing from the French side by mutual consent in February. Spurs find themselves in a huge battle to avoid the drop after losing 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, but they are actively planning for survival.

De Zerbi is also viewed as a potential candidate for Manchester United and Liverpool, should Arne Slot leave Anfield, but he is genuinely intrigued by the project at the club if they avoid Championship football.

The Times reports that there have been talks regarding De Zerbi taking over from Igor Tudor immediately, with a clause in the contract that would allow him to leave in the summer should they go down. However, Spurs have reservations over such a deal.

The managerial situation remains highly fluid, as Igor Tudor’s future as interim head coach was plunged back into doubt following the weekend’s loss. Since taking charge, the Croatian has overseen seven matches, suffering five defeats and managing just one draw. His solitary victory,

De Zerbi’s tactical evolution

The 46-year-old tactician has built a formidable reputation across Europe, particularly during his recent tenures at Brighton and Marseille. During his time on the English south coast, he oversaw 89 matches, securing 38 victories and subsequently took his expansive, attacking philosophy to France. Before his mutual departure in February, he managed 69 games across all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit, boasting an impressive return of 39 wins. What next in the relegation battle?

Returning from the international break, Tottenham face a daunting seven-game sprint to preserve their Premier League status. Sunday’s damaging 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest leaves Spurs firmly entrenched in the battle to beat the drop, sitting in 17th place on 30 points from 31 matches. Their conquerors climbed to 16th with 32 points, while West Ham sit just one point behind Tottenham in 18th.
