Musk accuses Spanish PM of ‘high treason’ for migrant amnesty measure

Once again intervening in Spanish politics, billionaire tech titan Elon Musk has accused Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of “high treason”.

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has once again lashed out at Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, this time over his government’s mass regularisation of undocumented migrants.

The measure, which will give short-term residency permits to over 500,000 undocumented migrants, has proven controversial in Spain and attracted the attention of right-wing agitators online.

“That filthy Sánchez is guilty of high treason,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns, in response to another post about the measure.

The comments come following Sánchez’s speech at the close of the Global Progressive Mobilisation summit in Barcelona and during which he defended the mass regularisation process promoted by his government.

“I want to tell the right and the far-right who oppose this that Spain is the daughter of migration and will not become the mother of xenophobia,” Sánchez said.

This is not the first time Musk has inserted himself into Spanish politics, however.

The tech billionaire previously intervened in reaction to Sánchez’s proposed ban on social media for under 16s and action against digital platforms and their executives who failed to remove “hate speech and illegal content”.

For that, Musk called him “a tyrant and a traitor to the Spanish people”.

In February, he reposted a message on X written by a right-wing influencer that described the Spanish government’s mass regularisation as “electoral engineering”, reacting with the comment: “Wow”.

The post, viewed millions of times, repeats misinformation common in online right-wing networks and suggests that Sánchez is trying to import 500,000 loyal voters in an attempt to rig democracy.

Sánchez recently wrote an article in the Financial Times in which he criticised “tech oligarchs” such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, arguing that they are not above the law or the public interest.

The Spanish leader has gained an international profile in recent years on the back of his outrider stances on foreign policy and migration.

He’s also effectively used global turmoil to emerge as progressive star and lead opposition to Washington.
