Macron to meet Lebanon’s PM in Paris to ‘reaffirm commitment’ for Israel truce

French President Emmanuel Macron will host Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday, with the French leader set to reaffirm support for the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire as both sides accuse each other of violations.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on Friday, but remains fragile.

The 15 members of the UN Security Council condemned an attack on Saturday that killed a French peacekeeper in Lebanon, calling for those responsible to “be brought to justice without delay”.

Macron and the UN accused pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah of being behind the attack.

In his meeting with Nawaf on Tuesday Macron intends to “reaffirm his commitment to strict respect for the ceasefire, France’s support for Lebanon’s territorial integrity, and the steps taken by the Lebanese state to fully guarantee its sovereignty and the monopoly on the use of force”, said a statement from the Élysée.

The meeting between Macron and Nawaf scheduled for 5.30pm and will be followed by a press conference.

Further direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel are expected to take place in Washington on Thursday.

At least 2,387 people have died in Lebanon in the past six weeks of fighting with Israel, according to the latest official death toll.
