Macron calls Trump’s remarks on his marriage ‘inelegant’

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Donald Trump’s comments about his marriage were “neither elegant nor up to standard”.

The US president was delivering a national address in Washington on the war in Iran, when he claimed that Brigitte Macron, Macron’s wife, treated her husband “extremely badly”.

“He’s still recovering from the right to the jaw,” Trump said, referring to a 2025 video which appeared to show the moment Macron was shoved in the face by his wife.

At the time, France’s president said they were “just joking about as we do”.

During the address on Wednesday, Trump also recalled asking Macron for France’s help in the Gulf – having previously accused France of failing to help in the war on Iran.

On strategic matters, the French President said that the Trump administration was constantly giving out contrary signals.

“There’s too much talk” he said, “and it’s giving off in every direction. But we all need stability, calm, and a return to peace.”
