EuroAirport Basel announces several new routes for summer

From March 29th and until October 31st, Switzerland’s EuroAirport in Basel will add eight new flights to its timetable.

The new routes from Basel include Bodrum (Turkey); Chisinau (Moldova); Lille (France); Podgorica (Montenegro); Stockholm; Warsaw and Poznan (both in Poland); and Tirgu Mureș (Romania).

With the addition of these new destinations, the range of flights from Basel includes Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, France, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia and Turkey.

Temporary suspension

However, these (and almost all other) flights to and from Basel will be cancelled between April 15th and May 20th while the airport will be renovating its main runway, causing all but one of its airlines to cancel their flights during this time.

EasyJet will be the only one operating, though with a significantly reduced flight schedule.

The low-cost carrier, the main airline operating out of Basel with a market share of 55 percent, will continue to operate seven flights daily, representing approximately 15 percent of its usual activity in that airport.

It will use a small aircraft, the Airbus 320, to fly only to nearby destinations, such as Hamburg, Palermo, London, Palma de Mallorca, Porto, and Barcelona.

What about summer flights from other Swiss airports?

Both Zurich and Geneva will add new routes from March 29th as well.

They include Polish city of Poznan and Rijeka on Croatia’s Adriatic coast from Zurich, as well as Dublin, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Malta,  and Skopje from Geneva.

What else you should know when planning your summer travel?

From March 29th until October 24th, the national airline, SWISS, is cutting 326 of its flights, including a route to the United States.

The US-bound flight impacted by the cuts is the one from Zurich to Chicago: its frequency will be reduced from 14 to 12 weekly.

Another long-haul route affected by the cut is the one from Zurich to Shanghai – it will only fly three times a week instead of seven.

The reason for these cuts is the shortage of pilots and aircraft.

But that’s not all.

While the above cancellations are due to logistics, many flights are suspended because of a political situation.

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, SWISS and Edelweiss have cancelled these flights:

Dubai through May 31st

Tel Aviv through May 31st

Abu Dhabi through October 24th

Amman through October 24th

Beirut through October 24th

Dammam through October 24th

Riyadh through October 24th

Erbil through October 24th

Muscat through October 24th

Tehran through October 24th
