Travel uncertainty is leading to more French people planning a summer holiday in their own country, making French resorts busier than usual.
Polling conducted for the French tourism authority reveals that 71 percent of French people plan to holiday in France this year, with many citing travel uncertainty linked to the US-Israeli invasion of Iran, and cost constraints as their reason for choosing France.
Spending the summer at the beach or in the mountains is a long-standing tradition for French people – overall 70 percent of France’s large tourist market is made up of French people holidaying in their own country.
But this year the number of people who say they plan to holiday in France or in Europe is higher, with only nine percent saying that they plan to travel outside Europe for a summer break.
Of those surveyed for Alliance France Tourisme, most cited travel uncertainty and the possibility that flights will be cancelled or prices raised.
But cost is also a factor – especially for people struggling with the rising cost of fuel and food, also linked to the Iran invasion – 35 percent of those surveyed said that their holiday budget is €1,000 or less, compared to 31 percent last year.
When it comes to foreign tourists, France is always a popular destination – but this year it may benefit from being easy to access by rail or road from European countries.

France has an impressive network of high-speed trains, which are fully electric, meaning that there is no risk of cancellations or price rises due to fuel shortages – in contrast to airlines, some of which are already cancelling flights.
